TECHNOLOGIES' XYLOC OPTIMIZES PC POWER USAGE WITH XYLOC POWER
MANAGEMENT
Automatically
Activates Microsoft Windows Power Management Based On User's
Proximity To PC
Conserves
Valuable Energy and Reduces Cost of PC Operations
Ann
Arbor, Mich., June 25, 2001— Ensure
Technologies, the award-winning leader in intelligent digital
information security solutions, today extended the capabilities
of its XyLoc wireless PC security and personalization
solution with XyLoc Power Management, designed to help organizations
better conserve precious energy from operating PCs and reduce
overall power and energy costs.
Using
its patented proximity technology, XyLoc has always been able
to detect the presence of an authorized user to make the PC
more secure and convenient to use. Now Ensure extends its
functionality with XyLoc Power Management to automatically
engage Microsoft Windows' power management capabilities after
the authorized user steps away from the PC. This significantly
increases the implementation of energy saving features and
ultimately lessens PC operating costs.
"Given
all the daily headlines in the news, there is significant
motivation for people and organizations to both save energy
and reduce expenses. Even though Microsoft has built power
management capabilities into its Windows operating systems,
too many people either do not take advantage of them, or are
not using them efficiently," said George Brostoff, co-founder
and president of Ensure. "XyLoc Power Management activates
Windows' power management capabilities to turn off monitors
and hard disks - or to put the system on standby - all based
on the user's proximity to the PC. It really is a wonderful
example of the flexibility of XyLoc and how it can be extended
to applications beyond security and personalization."
A recent report for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
by the Energy Analysis Department of the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory found that total direct power use by office
and network equipment is approximately 74 TWh per year. It
also found that while power management currently saves 23
TWh/year, complete adoption and proper use of power management
would result in additional savings of 17 TWh/year.
For
example, at a cost of 9 1/2 cents per kWh of electricity,
an organization with 1,000 PCs in a typical office environment
could save approximately $26,000 a year by using XyLoc Power
Management to ensure that Windows power management is enabled
and working efficiently.
"The
need for power management is a timely and growing concern
- it goes beyond road warriors trying to extend battery life.
These days, it's important to provide energy-saving technologies
that have a positive impact both on the planet and its resources
and on an organization's balance sheets," said Theresa
Nozick, industry analyst, Mobile Insights. "By combining
both security and energy savings in one offering, Ensure brings
to market a solution with features everyone can benefit from
and that also demonstrates the social consciousness of Ensure
and its users."
By letting
the PC know when the user has stepped away, users no longer
need to rely on inactivity timers to implement power management
mode. With these timers, the PC can't detect whether the user
is in front of the PC or has walked away. Using its wireless
technology, XyLoc software can be configured to automatically
begin power savings shortly after the user walks away from
the PC.
XyLoc
is proximity-activated and completely "hands-free,"
requiring no user interaction. Because it enables the PC to
know automatically and effortlessly where the authorized user
is in relation to the PC, XyLoc offers security features,
personalization and now, power savings in a way that was previously
unavailable.
