Sumner Regional Medical Center Selects Ensure Technologies' XyLoc MD For Convenient PC Security In Emergency Department

Proximity-Based Single Sign-On To MEDITECH Applications
Enables More Efficient Care

Ann Arbor , MI December 2, 2003 — Sumner Regional Medical Center has selected Ensure Technologies' XyLoc MD™ to streamline secure access to its PCs and MEDITECH emergency department applications.

Based in Gallatin, Tennessee, Sumner Regional Medical Center is a 145-bed facility serving a population of 200,000. The combination of HIPAA privacy regulations and the installation of the MEDITECH emergency department management system drove Sumner to keep login and logoff security procedures from interfering with the quality of patient care. Ensure Technologies, the leader in intelligent information security solutions, provides XyLoc MD, which delivers proximity-based authentication and full-time access control to reduce users' PC security obligations and concerns.

"XyLoc MD streamlines accessibility to patient information which results in more responsive patient care," said emergency department physician Dr. David Lawhorn. "It integrates smoothly with our MEDITECH software and makes it so much easier to use our PCs without the hassles of manually logging in and out of PCs and applications all the time."

Ensure's XyLoc MD provides full-time access control to thin client terminals and PCs, continuously authorizing users without burdening them with cumbersome security protocols. Its patented technology protects confidential data when it is most vulnerable - after logon, whenever the authorized user steps away from the PC. Users in XyLoc MD-protected facilities have immediate access to their applications and data and their workstations are automatically secured the moment they step away.

"We needed security and easy logins, so we looked at various biometric solutions first. When MEDITECH suggested that we look at XyLoc we were impressed immediately by its 'walk-away' security," said Vickie Carter, director of IT security for Sumner Regional Medical Center. "That's a benefit you just wouldn't get from a biometric solution alone. With XyLoc we get more than just security and easy logins - we get single sign-on into our MEDITECH applications, and the PC and applications are secured as soon as the caregiver moves on to treat the next patient."

XyLoc is unique in its ability to make authentication smarter by balancing security and convenience. Users are recognized based on their proximity to their PCs. They wear unique XyLoc Keycards (that can also double as their ID badge) that communicate securely with proximity detection hardware and sophisticated software residing on each workstation. A computer is unlocked only after XyLoc has identified and authenticated a user.

"We are pleased to be working with Sumner Regional Medical Center to provide quick, easy, and secure access to emergency department PCs and applications," said Dr. Thomas Xydis, president of Ensure. "There is a tremendous opportunity to improve the quality of patient care with technology - but only if that technology doesn't get in the caregivers' way. By deploying MEDITECH applications Sumner is bringing vital information to the caregivers where they need it most. But it's also important to make that caregiver's interactions with the PC and logins/logoffs as transparent as possible so they can focus on the patient, not the computer or a security policy."
