HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY TURNS TO XYLOC MD FOR CONVENIENT, CONTINUOUS SECURITY OF PATIENT INFORMATION

Ensure's Award-Winning Wireless Security Solution Lets Healthcare Professionals Focus On Patient Care Rather Than Information Security Policies

Ann Arbor, Mich., July 30, 2002— Healthcare organizations around the country are looking for ways to cut costs, increase the level of patient care, and protect access to patient information all at the same time. A growing number of leading healthcare organizations are turning to Ensure Technologies' XyLoc MD™, a wireless PC security product that has won the TEPR Award for Best Healthcare Security Solution at the TEPR Conference for two years running. Among the healthcare organizations benefiting from XyLoc's convenient security are:

  • Forest Health Services, Ypsilanti, Mich. and its 10 treatment centers around the country;
  • JPS Health Network, Fort Worth, Tex.;
  • Providence Hospital, Southfield, Mich.;
  • Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center, Ft. Huachuca, Ariz.;
  • St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Belleville, Ill.; and
  • Veterans Administration Medical Centers around the country.

XyLoc provides an out-of-the-box solution that conveniently protects patient data while delivering continuous authorization of healthcare workers without burdening them with cumbersome security protocols. Doctors and nurses at XyLoc-protected facilities have immediate access to patient data and other information, but the moment an authorized user steps away XyLoc MD secures the workstation.

"As healthcare organizations convert to electronic patient information systems, the security of this sensitive data must be considered. We are delighted that healthcare organizations are embracing XyLoc," said George Brostoff, president of Ensure. "The healthcare industry is such an important market for Ensure that we developed XyLoc MD to address the specific needs of healthcare workers. Healthcare facilities deploying XyLoc can easily meet the legal and ethical obligations for protecting patient information."

"While we tried to make electronic patient information more available to doctors and nurses, current PC security technology had forced users to log on and off between each use of the computer," said Jim Roberts, Director I/T, JPS Health Network. "At patient care stations where many care givers are sharing access to a workstation, the two or three minutes it took to switch between users became a barrier to productivity. In addition to providing full-time security, XyLoc MD has given our healthcare professionals trouble-free access and freedom to do their jobs."

About XyLoc MD

At hospitals deploying XyLoc MD, healthcare professionals are recognized based on their proximity to department PCs. Users wear unique XyLoc KeyCards (that can double as their hospital ID badge) that communicate securely with proximity detection hardware and sophisticated software residing on each workstation. A computer is unlocked only after XyLoc has identified and authenticated a user.

Authentication can be as easy as walking up to the computer, or as robust as requiring the user to input their name and password in addition to possessing the KeyCard. Users need to remember only one password, and with XyLoc's Single Sign On functionality all of their applications and records will automatically appear each time they approach a workstation. However, as soon as the user walks away from the computer, XyLoc MD secures the PC and the applications until the user returns or another authorized user approaches.

In instances where multiple authorized users are in the area, XyLoc MD allows the appropriate person to select his or her name from a list of detected users. XyLoc's Secured Kiosk feature allows multiple users to share a single network account, which results in fast yet secure access to the network and applications. XyLoc's Roaming System Access allows healthcare practitioners to have their applications and records follow them from PC to PC as they do their rounds. The end result is a security solution that protects patient records without reducing the quality of patient care.
